Steam Punk Templates

These templates have proven very popular this week, mainly thanks to the Flickr Group Quilt-Along forum, and the kind comments by Kristy from HandMadeRetro, who is also a member of our Melbourne Modern Quilt Guild.

The Steam Punk Quilt Pattern by Jen Kingwell Designs is available from Amitie, in Gardenvale Vic, and other stockists in Australia & overseas.

Once you've bought this pattern, I'd be happy to supply the matching templates, with the 1/4 inch seam allowance, for $15 +
$3 postage (in Australia). Turnaround time is about 3-4 days from payment. See my website www.SunsetSeams.com. Choose your own colour (from our range), and we can etch your name on each piece, at no charge.

Thanks to all those ladies who've ordered this week - I hope you enjoy using the templates in the Quilt-Along!

  1. hi Lisa

I have just printed off the order form, to order a set of Steam Punk templates. I would love the set with the 1/4 seam allowance - is that an alternative Steam Punk template set? Or do I buy a Steam Punk template set, and then the 1/4 inch allowance is an extra template?

I bought a set of your AMH feather templates through Lorena, as part of our AusModBee - and was so excited when I saw on the Flickr group that a few of the girls had started ordering Steam Punk templates from you. Your templates are awesome!

    Thanks so much. Catherine

  2. Hi Catherine,

    Thanks for your comment.

If you check your copy of Jen Kingwell's pattern, you will see that the shapes provided don't include the 1/4 inch seam allowance - this needs to be added. I can make templates that do include this 1/4, thereby making the rotary-cutting of several layers of fabric a bit quicker and more accurate - especially as there are a few curves. (A 28mm rotary blade can be used, or the usual 45mm)

However, some ladies who like to hand-piece prefer templates to be the "exact" size of the pattern. That works if you want to draw around the shape with a pencil line (this then becomes the "sewing line"), and then cut a rough 1/4 inch extra seam allowance with scissors. This would apply, for instance, if you only wanted to make one or two blocks for a cushion. If you like, I could make templates like this.

For a whole quilt, though, I would recommend getting a Steam Punk template set which has the extra quarter inch added. Having that exact seam allowances makes for faster machine piecing.

The best way to order either email me at: SunsetSeams@hotmail.com, or else post your order form to: PO Box 221, Elwood 3184.

    Cheers,
    Lisa
